- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The American Lung Association finds that air quality in Anchorage is healthy but failing in Fairbanks. The association's "State of the Air 2013" report says Alaska's largest city is the 14th cleanest city in the nation and has substantially low levels of air pollution when compared to other cities its size. Fairbanks air pollution is far worse. The report says Alaska's second largest city is the ninth-most polluted city in the nation for short-term particle pollution and 14th most polluted for year-round particle pollution. The report says particle pollution in Fairbanks can spike dangerously for hours or weeks, or remain unhealthy year-round. The report looked at Environmental Protection Agency pollution data gathered from 2009-2011.
