- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Army officials say a Fort Wainwright soldier from Texas who was struck by a log-hauling truck near Salcha has died of his injuries almost three months later. Officials said Tuesday that 21-year-old Spc. Zachary Lane New of Jarrell, Texas, died Monday at a rehabilitation center at a San Antonio veterans hospital. State Troopers have said the truck driver was hauling a trailer full of logs on the Richardson Highway Jan. 29. Road conditions were icy when the truck struck an Army Humvee that was turning into a parking lot to the Midway Lodge. According to troopers, the truck went into the parking lot and struck New as he exited a parked Humvee. Troopers say the truck then struck two parked Stryker armored vehicles.
