Fort Wainwright hangar project on hold

- FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Plans to build an aviation maintenance hangar at Fort Wainwright are on hold because a contractor who lost the bid has filed a protest with the Government Accountability Office. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Kiewit Building Group filed the protest June 26. The company challenges the Army Corps of Engineers' evaluation of its proposal and the award of the $70.6 million contract to Watterson Construction Company. Corps spokeswoman Pat Richardson says a ruling will take about four months.
The 159,000-square-foot hangar is scheduled to be finished in 2014. It will be built on the south side of the Fort Wainwright airfield. Watterson, based in Anchorage, was awarded the contract June 7.
