- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The former director of an Anchorage shelter accused of stealing thousands of dollars has been charged with theft. The Anchorage Daily News reports that an arrest warrant has been issued for 60-year-old Steven Sparks. Catholic Social Services hired Sparks in late November to run the shelter. Sparks had access to two safes used to keep cash for the homeless people staying at the shelter. Charging documents say Sparks was supposed to meet with a Catholic Social Services employee the day before Christmas, but never showed up for the meeting. Authorities say he returned to the shelter after hours and removed lockboxes from two safes on consecutive evenings. Sparks was fired and hasn't contacted Catholic Social Services since. The Daily News says Sparks has two prior felony drug convictions.
