- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage has held the 17th annual Alaska Ski for Women. Sunday's event again was a festive affair to fight the serious problem of domestic violence. Channel-2 reports that more than 1,300 female skiers participated in the fundraiser at Kincaid Park, with many donning elaborate and unique costumes to create a party-like atmosphere. Race officials say over the past 17 years, Alaska Ski for Women has donated more than $1 million dollars to help programs in the fight against domestic violence. The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault estimates that nearly 60 percent of women in Alaska have experienced sexual violence, partner violence or both.
