Anchorage police offer citizen academy

- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The Anchorage Police Department is recruiting people for its semi-annual Citizen Police Academy. The 12-week program gives Anchorage residents the chance to expand their understanding of police operations. Three-hour classes are held Wednesday nights starting Feb. 6. There are also two Saturday afternoon sessions. Topics include traffic investigations, gangs, domestic violence, cybercrime, the SWAT team and felony investigations. Other agencies will make presentations on the sex offender registry, corrections and Alaska State Troopers. Graduates of the program will have the chance to go on a ride-along with a patrol officer or observe the dispatch center. Applicants must be 21. They must pass a background check and live within police patrol jurisdiction.
Applications can be found on the police department website: www.muni.org/apd . The deadline to apply is noon Friday.
