ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The state is closing the king salmon fishery at Anchorage's Ship Creek between the mouth of the creek and the Chugach Power plant dam, starting Sunday.  Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials say the water has been high and muddy, so the agency has been unable to conduct an
escapement count. Spokesman Ken Marsh says the department aims to ensure it meets the minimum 750 spawning adult kings required for hatchery brood
stock that are later introduced to area lakes. Officials say because of the escapement information uncertainty and weak king runs in other Cook Inlet locations, closing the fishery is a prudent move. Marsh says Ship Creek will reopen for the coho salmon fishery July 14, one day after the regular king fishery was originally set to close.
