Risk is high for avalanches south of Anchorage

Dec 27, 2012 -- 10:30am

- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The risk of avalanches south of Anchorage is high. Officials at the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center told Channel-2 News reports that deep snow along Turnagain Arm, and the Chugach and Kenai mountains, is resting on an early-season weak snow pack. Avalanche mitigation efforts are under way. Alaska Department of Transportation crews were out with large cannons on Wednesday to mitigate the avalanche risk along the Seward Highway. The idea is to use the cannons to create small slides in order to prevent large and dangerous avalanches. The avalanche information center says warm weather forecast for the remainder of the week will increase the danger as several feet of new snow settles onto dense slabs.
