Ex-Fairbanks mechanic accused of stealing tires

- FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - A former Fairbanks city mechanic has been accused of stealing tires. A criminal complaint filed this week says four Bridgestone tires worth a total of $918 were taken from the city public works garage in April. The foreman reported the theft to police when he discovered them on mechanic Matthew Layral's vehicle. Fairbanks police say Layral confessed to taking the tires. Pat Cole, the mayor's chief of staff, told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that Layral was fired after the theft was discovered. Cole says the charge was not filed until this week because of a mix-up with the district attorney's office, which thought the city's investigation was still open.
