Anchorage mayor plans forums on sales tax

- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The mayor of Anchorage says he's not sure he will propose a sales tax but that he wants to hear what residents think of the idea. Mayor Dan Sullivan says he's planning four public forums to determine if residents would be receptive to paying sales tax. Sullivan says complaints about property taxes made him decide to explore the idea. Voters have rejected a sales tax four times. Sullivan tells the Anchorage Daily News that past sales tax efforts were thrown onto the ballot with little discussion. A sales tax would have to be approved by the Anchorage Assembly and ratified by 60 percent of voters to take effect.
