UAA: Hit should have been reported to police

Jul 12, 2013 -- 11:00am
- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A report released by the University of Alaska Anchorage says campus police should have been notified about a 2011 incident in which the school's then-head hockey coach struck a player with a stick during a 2011 practice drill. The report was obtained by the Anchorage Daily News through a records request. In January 2011, then-coach Dave Shyiak struck forward Nick Haddad with his stick after Haddad incorrectly performed a drill. The incident first became public when the Daily News reported it this May. About six weeks earlier, Shyiak was fired following eight losing seasons. The report was compiled by investigator Steve Goetz of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Police Department. Goetz interviewed UAA staff, players and coaches, including Shyiak and then-athletic director Steve Cobb, who was fired in May.
