Murkowski supports bill banning anti-gay job bias

- JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Alaska's Republican U.S. senator is supporting a bill that would prohibit employers from discriminating against workers based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, in a Facebook post, says she's a strong believer that individuals should be judged on whether they can do the job, not on their sexual orientation. She was among three Republicans on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to support advancing the measure, which Democrats supported. Murkowski says as with any legislation that would affect employees and employers, a balance must be struck between protecting employees against discrimination and making sure employers aren't "unduly burdened" with compliance costs. She says improvements to the bill might be needed but workplace discrimination should never be tolerated. Murkowski also recently announced support for same-sex marriage.
